Everyone has heard of drug abuse, but did you know that drug abuse doesn’t have to be abuse of illegal drugs? It is quite possible for people to abuse prescription medication and it is sadly happening amongst teens in greater numbers when it comes to prescription stimulants.
What are the Good Grade Pills?
These prescriptions include medications such as Ritalin, Adderall and Vyvanse which are normally given to help kids do better in school. These drugs are considered to be Class 2 controlled substances in the same category as cocaine and morphine, but students sometimes manage to get them by faking the symptoms of ADHD so their doctors will write a prescription.
How do Kids Get these Drugs?
Another way they get them is by buying them from other kids that already have a prescription for the drugs. These pills sometimes bring between $5 and $20 a pill and many teens get the prescription just to sell them to other kids. Some want them because they think the pills will help them get a better grade and they are under pressure to get good grades in order to make it into elite colleges.
The reality is that the drugs are said to act like a steroid for the brain and if a student desires to have an academic advantage over the other students, these drugs do give them that advantage even if they are not being prescribed by a doctor. But even if they do improve a person’s short term ability to do better at tests or other things that require concentration, they can cause bad side effects in the long run.
Side effects of the good grade pills
Studies have shown that abuse of stimulant drugs in teens can eventually cause the person to suffer a sudden “crash†and get depression, changes in heart rate, mood swings and exhaustion. Plus, these drugs are very addictive and the kids are known for taking them in higher doses than normally prescribed.
Plus, it’s not just the kids taking these drugs illegally. Some parents are doing so as well, and may even be stealing them from their children’s prescriptions. The Center for Disease Control reports that this phenomenon is increasing up to 30 percent and has become a danger.
Due to these abuse issues, there is talk of more testing and studies on what to do about this increasing problem. It could be another chapter in the world of fighting drug abuse issues. The dilemma, according to some officials, is that these drugs do help increase performance and it is somewhat unclear about what to do to address this problem.
